HUMANITIES

Viral Campaign & Video Performance

by LORENZO RAZZINO
with KARMA B and MARGÒ PACIOTTI

The HUMANITIES project is an investigation into the use of images that have been edited and reworked in post-production via a process that turns them into pop-up images. An opportunity to offer free art for people to enjoy in public. This work borders on street art, but it is deliberately non-discriminatory and inclusive in nature, and includes some of the new technology revolutionising the world of digital imaging.

NOTES ON “DRAG”Comparing contemporary boundaries of performativity is a collective exhibition of contemporary art, curated by Andrea Acocella and Alberto Boncoraglio, conceived for the LGBTQIA+ BAR.LINA exhibition space and cultural centre, in Rome’s historic San Lorenzo district.

Contemporary drag performativity is an artistic experience of encroachment, a place of critical reflection and open philosophical-anthropological debate; it represents an extremely complex theoretical subject matter, with an abundance of perspectives and multiple avenues of investigation to explore. A conglomeration of practices and critical propositions that had already come to maturity in the last decade of the 20th century, and continues to influence the journey of art, art criticism and new media, posing questions that primarily concern the notions of identity and body.

One inescapable premise for curatorial research was the examination of the first critical studies from the second half of the 20th century that placed corporeality as the central focus. This refers to the practice of Body Art and Performance and the theories that can be traced back to the seminal work by Lea Vergine, The Body as Language, in which, due to a semantic shift, the artist, through self-representation, becomes both the “subject and object of the work”, according to the now famous definition by Willoughby Sharp.

Secondly, “Notes on Camp”, the essay by Susan Sontag — from which we ironically draw inspiration for the title of the exhibition — without which it would not be possible to define some aspects of contemporary drag aesthetics. As Sontag reminds us, camp consists of:

going against the grain of one’s sex. What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine…
In camp, there is […] a relish for the exaggeration of sexual characteristics and personality mannerisms.” In a word: drag.

The aim of NOTES ON “DRAG” is to record – like notes jotted down in a notebook – these new perspectives of singularity, placing a group of artists who are varied in terms of age, sex, gender, geographical origin, career and medium of expression in the same space, so as to open a dialogue between them since they have all made performativity their artistic language, along with some references to the contemporary Italian performative “past”, illustrated by a selection of archival documentary material. For this reason, the exhibition favours a strongly interdisciplinary approach that also contemplates and enhances other creative aspects related to the production.

SUMMER QUEER – HUMAN OR NOT #1

Lab Digital humanities

by MARGÒ PACIOTTI

The objective of the laboratory is to stimulate curiosity, open-mindedness and even a certain lightness towards the diversity of human beings — that same approach to taking life lightly that Italo Calvino describes as “gliding over things from above, without letting things weigh on your heart”.

The laboratory will revolve around experimenting with the aesthetics of drag with the premise of putting yourself “in someone else’s shoes” in order to foster recognition of and respect for all forms of diversity.

ONCE UPON A TIME / a VR experience

VR installazione

by ONDADURTO TEATRO
directed by MARGÒ PACIOTTI, LORENZO PASQUALI, OMAR RASHID

BAR.LINA Viale dello Scalo S. Lorenzo 49
Metro A e B Termini + bus and tram + car/motorbike sharing
Free event – by reservation

The evolution and transformation of a show into something unique and surprising. Welcome one and all to the digital age – a fantastic, surreal and surprising world.
This production has its roots in a performance that was originally developed for an international public, which involved a variety of audience types and was able to engage with both adults and children.
A fully immersive, 360-degree 3D VR experience: a surprising project that places the audience member at the centre of the action, totally surrounded by a spectacle that includes large moving stage machinery and spectacular effects, creating a VR show with a strong emotional impact.

This is much more than your average story about princesses and heroes. The fairytale world of fantasy, which has by now become crystallised into the saccharine versions we all know, is thrown into disorder, so much so that the line between Good and Evil becomes very blurred. Stories, legends and fables from the greatest minds of the genre – from Lewis Carroll to the Brothers Grimm, from Johann Karl August Musäus to Hans Christian Andersen – are reinterpreted with a noir twist and a “bittersweet” flavour.
Could Little Red Riding Hood have a dark side? And why can’t a witch or a stepmother have a good, sweet or even melancholy side?

ONCE UPON A TIME/a VR Experience is a colourful and spellbinding revue, a multimedia world with large sets and moving machinery, water effects and the intermingling of technological influences, creating an enchanting experience. A show that blends together ancient traditions from the world of fairytales and strips them of their sickly-sweet essence, giving rise to a highly digital technological experience.

GENDER GAMES

Theatre

by ONDADURTO TEATRO
with H.E.R. e MARGÒ PACIOTTI

CENTRALE PRENESTE TEATRO Via Alberto da Giussano 58
Metro C Pigneto + bus and tram + car/motorbike sharing
Full-priced ticket: €10 – reduced tickets: €8

GENDER GAMES is a show that constructs its own aesthetic language by focusing on the continuous and cross-cutting dialogue between different expressive languages: the body and music.

This original work sees MARGÒ taking to the stage in collaboration with an exceptional musician: H.E.R. An intimate, autobiographical, but at the same time universal, journey of reflection on identity. An emotional voyage through light and shade, which is capable of transforming the body/object into meaning.

Tearing down the boundaries between genres using a cross-cutting musical approach: from baroque to electronic music, from rock to pop. When classical music, pop and electronic music meet, the mixture is often explosive and you are sure to find yourself bowled over by the scintillating results.

The music, with original arrangements for the show, was created by H.E.R, and developed by taking one question as a starting point: how can you create soundscapes that are profoundly linked to the meanings found in a very personal, intimate story? Can music help lead the spectator and, through live action, create imagery in the minds of the audience themselves?

Research into contemporary sounds has led to the creation of a show in which everything has been transformed into a personal narrative through music, in a dense network of visual representations, with particularly powerful “images”, which represent both symbolic and archetypical forms.

The goal was to take personal stories as a starting point, but to direct them towards a shared universal experience, in order to develop different points of reflection.

An intersectional approach formed the foundation of the writing, in which various categories interact on multiple levels simultaneously. GENDER GAMES, a world where you can be who you want be, interacts with the real world in a continuous reversal of points of view…so, who will you be?

QUEER SUMMER… AN ENCOUNTER WITH KARMA B

Talk & Theatre

by and with KARMA B

As “bigwigs” in the world of social media and Italian TV, the drag duo Karma B tell the story of the LGBTQIA+ community and society as a whole through KANZONCINE (songs), transforming them into modern-day storytelling troubadours, but in stilettos!

The duo goes through twenty-five years of Italian entertainment and musical culture, seen through the filter of drag, which, like all filters, only allows certain things through – in this case, only the most colourful aspects.
